HIGHLIGHTS
Nov 25 - Turkey Day Relays
Nov 18 - Town Race #1 The cold let up
enough to hold the first race of the season on a minimal amount
of snow. Reese Hanneman took top high school boys' honors
with a time of 22:53.1. This earned him a second place overall
in a field of 98 competitors. Gerry Hovda finished 6th overall
and 3rd in the high school boy division.
The Lathrop girls finished strong with the top six positions.
Lily Walton led the high school girls with a time of 20:28
for the 5 km course. Ingrid Schmidt was a close second place
and only 10.7 seconds off of Lily's time.
Olivia Karns, Heather Edic, Rosemary Hanson, and Kyla Stark
captured the remaining top six positions. Eligibility kept
several West Valley girls from competing in the high school
division.
2004-2005 State Meet
The Lathrop boys team was led by
team captain Brett Broda through all three days of the State
Championships at Birch Hill. Brett finished 8th in the 10k
mass start skate race, 3rd in the 7.5 km classic race, and
led the first leg of the 4x5 km relay into the stadium. Reese
Hanneman had the second highest finishes for Lathrop on both
days, with a 41st place finish in the freestyle race and 24th
in the classic. Brett and Reese teamed up with Wade Stoddard
and Karl Schauer and raced to a 6th place finish out of 19
teams in the 4x5km relay. The boys team of Brett, Reese, Wade,
Karl, Nicholas Ferree, and William Coleman earned 6th place
in overall team standings. The boys also claimed top honors
for the State Academic Award, with a combined GPA of 4.0.
The Lathrop girls team
of Liz Tsigonis, Ingrid Schmidt, Carrie Sorensen, Lily Walton,
Kim Green, and Kyla Stark earned 8th place in overall team
standings. Lily Walton had the top finish for the girls in
the 7.5 km skate race, placing 22nd. Liz Tsigonis finished
in 39th. In the 5km classic event, Liz had the top Lathrop
finish in 16th, and Carrie Sorensen tied for 30th. The girls
team of Liz Tsigonis, Carrie Sorensen, Ingrid Schmidt, and
Lily Walton raced to a 8th place finis in the relay.
Juniors Liz Tsigonis
and Karl Schauer were named to the ASAA Good Sport team.
2004-2005 Region Champions
The Lathrop Boys and Girls ski
teams both claimed 2005 Region VI Championship titles. The
boys varsity realy team of Karl Schauer, Reese Hanneman, Wade
Stoddard, and Bret Broda led from the start of the relay and
won the event by a margin of 1:13.8 over West Valley. This
incresed the two day lead to 1:42.1 for the overall team title.
Lathrop's second team of Nicholas Ferree, Ian Wilkinson, Gerry
Hovda, and William Coleman finished third in the relay.
In the girls relay, Liz Tsigonis
trailed West Valley's varsity by one minute in the opening
leg. When Carrie Sorensen handed off to Lily Walton at the
end of the second Classic leg, the Wolfpack led by one minute,
44 seconds. Lily overtook West Valley's third leg, and gave
Lathrop a 36 second lead when she tagged Ingrid Schmidt in
the anchor leg. After Christina Gillis caught Ingrid, the
two skiers battled to the finish line. West Valley edged out
the Lathrop girls varsity team by only 0.5 seconds over the
12 km distace. The girls still won the team championship by
more than six and a half minutes for the two day event.
The Lathrop girls second team
of Kim Green, Olivia Karns, Angene Johnson, and Kyla Stark
placed third, while the all senior team of Polly Grijalva,
Brittany Karns, Skye Sturm, and Hillary Schwafel were 4th.
